Wasteland (Wasteland #1) By Susan Kim (Audiobook)
Lord of The Flies, The Tribe, Gone.....
If you are a fan of films, television series and books like the examples above then you'll love the Wasteland series.

When I first started this book I felt it was a slow starter because it took a while to get used to the characters and the way they expressed themselves. As you read through the book you grow up with Esther and learn what it is to be a responsible adult. The trouble is there are no adults because nobody lives that long due to a disease that takes them long before they reach old age.

I love how it is written, the speech of the characters work, they are children growing up in a wasteland of what was once a thriving place. The kids speak like they have never been to school and they truthfully haven't. They partner and have children at a young age and most probably dead by 17. A lot of the reviews I have read did not like the way it had been written, if you keep with it I feel the story really builds.

I have also seen in reviews where they feel things of the world weren't explained enough. This has been done on purpose, there are not records and barely anyone can read. These children do not keep a record of their history because they are basically living in the stone age, they don't know what happened and why certain people are the way they are.

I feel people turn away from this story too quickly, the trilogy is great together and if you turn away you are missing out on better adventures where Esther has become who she should be.

Give Wasteland a chance and you should really try the audiobook with Laura Knight Keating, she reads it how I feel the characters talk.
