Welcome to the first Musical Monday of August 2017!
Every Year in August I take a musical or musical film and write about how it has intertwined into my life and modern society. This year I am going through Disney Films because most of them musicals.

We four Mondays to squeeze in some musical radness and our first musical for Monday 7th Augusts Musical is:
Mary Poppins
Practically Perfect In Every Way.

Mary Poppins
In turn of the century London, a magical nanny employs music and adventure to help two neglected children become closer to their father.- IMDB

The original Mary Poppins film is a pretty iconic and most people know at least two of the songs from it.

"Highly trained fish" - my father in law's explanation to why the bird looks so real.

The original stories comes from P.L.Travers (Pamela Lyndon Travers) which were published from 1934 onwards and filled the hearts of children and adults alike with a little heart-warming magic.

Beautiful old book cover.
Disney adapted them in 1964 into the musical film we all know and love that stared Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke.

And What A Lovely Thing She Is Too.

There has been films depicting that very moment history was made and this classic film became part of musicals forever.
Author P.L. Travers reflects on her childhood after reluctantly meeting with Walt Disney, who seeks to adapt her Mary Poppins books for the big screen. - IMDB

Julie Andrews
Then and Now

Julie Andrews has always been at the bright centre of musicals and musical film for me, she has that musical glow that not a lot of people have and she can light up the hearts of many. Even when she is not singing.

Sister Suffragette

In this film the Suffragettes seem to be at their largest movement and Mrs Banks is one herself. This shows a piece in history that changed the world for many women.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Life I lead
I never really liked Mr Banks because he had no time for his family or children, I understand we all have to work to pay the bills but sometimes sacrificing your children's time is not worth it.

A Spoonful of Sugar

Mary Poppins The Musical

There has since been a musical of the film that was received incredibly well.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Late Late Show With James Corden:
Crosswalk The Musical
The UK's very own James Corden who is well know for 'Gavin and Stacey' and of course being the current host for America's 'The Late Late Show' recreates musicals on crosswalks/traffic light crossings. In this particular episode he recreates Mary Poppins the musical.

Dick Van Dyke

It wasn't till I was older that I noticed how terrible Dick Van Dykes cockney accent was. Back then when I was little I just accepted that's what a chimney sweep sounded like and moved on.

Jolly Holiday

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious

This song is quite iconic and I have seen heard many covers of if, some are straight and some are funny like Malinda Kathleen Reese's Google Translate version.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Stay Awake

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There have been many covers and parodies over the years, this does include these:

Todrick Hall is well know for is twisted and modernised versions of musicals, his 'TheWizard of Ahhhs' featuring the acapella band Pentatonix is particularly good. The story is told by song only and using modern pop and rap.

Feed The Birds

A slow but beautiful song that seems to be over locked because the upper beat songs overshadow it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chim Chim Cher-ee

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step In Time
'Step In Time' is a great up beat song filled with a lot of energy and enthusiasm, I always loved the dancing.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Let's Go Fly A Kite
Finally one of the best ending songs, it ends the film on a light hearted note which is Disney's usual way forwards.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mary Poppins Returns
We are going to be treated to a new Mary Poppins adventure in 2018, shall look forwards to this greatly.
